Elevate your home garden with these premium Pigeon Pea seeds, also known as Gandul (in Spanish), Gungo Pea, Red Gram, or Congo Pea. This packet contains 12 carefully selected seeds harvested in November 2025 at Ochillee Farm in Cusseta, Georgia (USDA Hardiness Zone 8B). Originally sourced from Puerto Rico several years ago, the stock has been rigorously selected each season for superior hardiness and productivity under southeastern U.S. growing conditions.

A versatile tropical legume and short-lived perennial (typically grown as an annual in temperate zones), Pigeon Pea is prized for its adaptability. Plants require approximately 6–7 months from sowing to produce mature, edible pods and will not survive frost; they perform best when started after the last frost in full sun with well-draining soil. Once established, they exhibit strong drought tolerance thanks to a deep taproot system and serve as an effective nitrogen-fixing cover crop, naturally enriching garden soil for subsequent plantings—an excellent choice for sustainable and permaculture systems.

The attractive yellow-to-red flowers are highly appealing to pollinators, including bees and butterflies, supporting local biodiversity while providing visual interest in the landscape. Mature plants reach 3–10 feet in height, offering both ornamental and functional value.

Culinary uses are extensive and culturally significant: young green seeds and pods can be enjoyed fresh (similar to green peas) in rice dishes and stews, while mature dried seeds are a staple in hearty soups and the iconic Puerto Rican national dish, Arroz con Gandules. Nutritionally, the seeds are an outstanding source of plant-based protein (approximately 18–28% by dry weight), essential amino acids such as methionine, lysine, and tryptophan, fiber, and minerals, with low fat and no cholesterol.

These seeds represent a direct connection to Ochillee Farm’s commitment to preserving productive, regionally adapted varieties. Plant them for abundant harvests, soil health benefits, and a touch of Caribbean heritage in your garden. Seeds are hand-selected and packed fresh for optimal viability.
